Streetscape Activation Program

Third City Studio’s Streetscape Activation Program brings art beyond the walls of the gallery and into the everyday life of the neighborhood.

Working with West Side artists, young people, and community partners, we create public-facing art that adds color and creativity to North Avenue and the growing North Austin Arts District. The program creates new opportunities for local artists while making the creative work already happening in Austin more visible to residents, businesses, transit riders, and visitors.

Projects can take many forms: from murals and painted panels to storefront installations, temporary artwork, and other creative uses of public-facing spaces.

NICKSALSA1, Austin | Paint and Oil-based marker, 2026

Austin-based artist Jorge Rivera, who creates work under the name NICKSALSA1, created the program’s current streetscape installation for the North Austin Arts District. Rivera works across painting, oil-based marker, and materials and techniques rooted in graffiti and street art.

The installation brings his work directly into the neighborhood streetscape, creating a large-scale piece celebrating the Austin neighborhood, designed to be experienced as part of North Avenue itself.

We want this program to keep growing with ideas from artists and the community.

Third City Studio welcomes proposals for creative projects that could enliven North Avenue and other public-facing spaces in the North Austin Arts District. Ideas can be fully developed or still taking shape. They might include murals, temporary installations, painted or fabricated artwork, storefront or window projects, community-created work, or something we haven’t thought of yet.

We are especially interested in hearing from artists who live or work on Chicago’s West Side, as well as residents, young people, community organizations, businesses, and others with ideas for creative projects in the neighborhood.
